Historical
The Tan-Tan Moussem, considered a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity, is an annual gathering of nomadic people, belonging to different tribes of the Moroccan Sahara, coming together to share the richness of their culture and diversity. The Moussem is living proof of the preservation and enhancement of this intangible heritage, strengthening the Kingdom’s Southern Provinces’ deep commitment to their roots and habits.
The Moussem of Tan-Tan « ALMOUGGAR », held under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI may God assist him, is held annually under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, of Tourism, of Communication, of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, of the Interior, and other public and private entities. It’s a manifestation of the nomadic culture on both national and international scale, classified masterpiece of Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO since 2005.
Wishing to improve the organisation and governance of the Moussem of Tan-Tan, and more broadly to contribute to the preservation and valorisation of the cultural heritage of Saharan Morocco, the Al Mouggar Foundation was created in June 2014 under the presidency of His Excellency Mohamed Fadel Benyaich.
The Foundation’s goal, on one hand, is to manage hereafter, the organisation of the Moussem in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, of Tourism, of Communication, of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, of the Interior, and other public and private entities. On the other hand, the Foundation aims to promote this specific heritage of the Guelmim Es-smara Region on a national and international scale.
The objective of the Foundation is to keep the Moussem’s Magic alive through several activities, meetings, exhibitions, caravans… on global level.
